Slate is a fine-grained homogeneous sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash. It has been metamorphosed in a way that gives it high fissility (the ability or tendency of a rock to split along flat planes of weakness). Slate is usually bluish-black or gray-black in color but it also has red, green, and purple variations.
It is popular for a wide variety of uses such as roofing, flooring, and flagging because of its durability and attractive appearance. Slate is also relatively easy to maintain—it can be cleaned with a broom or mop and only needs to be resealed every 3-5 years.

Slate is a very sustainable material. It is totally inert and ecological, with a simple, efficient production process. It has one of the lowest embodied energies for a stone, making it very environmentally friendly and a great choice in material.
An application of slate is in roofing. The slate stone is cut into the desired shape and then placed into rows and nailed into place. Slate is a great material for roofing as it is very durable and low maintenance.
