LATEX PAINT
Source & Production
Paint: a liquid coating applied to a surface.
Latex/or water-based binders are synthetic solid polymers dissolved in water with soap.
Latex paints are water-based (use water as solvent); they are made with either acrylic or vinyl acrylic as the binder. The binder in paint helps it adhere to the surface. Water evaporates When applied to a surface, and individual resin particles pack together. Resins bind the pigment particles into a continuous, flexible film.
Characteristics
-
Dried material is flexible
-
Less durable that oil-based paints
-
Relatively quick dry time
-
Good for general projects (walls/ ceilings)
-
available in almost any color
-
does not burn
-
can be formulated to be flame retardant and
-
protect a substrate.
-
protects a surface from water and moisture.
Maintenance
Requirements
Water-based paint usually dry within 4 hours (depending on the humidity) can be diluted with water/ become water-resistant when dry.
Brushstrokes show in the dried paint.
The sheen determines how resilient the surface will be; cleaning can be done by dusting and/ or a water and soap solution to wipe down the surface.
Environmental Impact
Indoor air quality issues:
During the drying process, volatile organic compounds(VOC) from the paint escape into the air. Low VOC paints art altered so that the compounds are not present.VOC emissions laws require more solids added to the mixture to make it heavier and slower to dry.
Paint cannot be scraped off and reused once it is dry. Dried paint must be disposed of properly
Disposal
Disposal of paint is governed by law:
Latex-based paint dries into a solid piece in the open. Paint can be spread out to dry; when hardened, it can be disposed of with other trash.
VOC
Volatile Organic compounds are emitted from paint while it is still in a liquid state.
Design
Opportunity
Interior vs. Exterior
Paint formulated for indoor use differs from paint formulated for exterior use since exterior paints must allow moisture to escape. Exterior paint protects wood or siding from weather, including humidity and expansion and contraction from temperature fluctuations, and resists sun damage. For interiors, the surface most often painted is a wall because that is the surface most noticed.

Product Application
Latex additives can be put in the mortar to allow it to move without cracking.
Paint is available in five sheens( sheen varies by the amount of pigment/
volume concentration (PVC))
-
flat/ matte : The lowest sheen is
-
eggshell and satin : 2nd lowest sheens
-
Semi-gloss: medium sheen
-
Gloss: highest sheen
