GRANITE
pa nou chang - ds 224 - fall 2020
Granite is an igneous rock that has crystals or visible size grains, consisting of quartz and feldspar. It is hard, strong, chemical resistant and is less susceptible to etching therefore it is difficult to scratch. Granite is often used for floors due to that fact that it holds up well to foot traffic. It is also used for countertops because it has a heat tolerance of up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Since granite is an igneous rock it was formed by lava, molten magma, that went through cooling and crystalizing. Italy, Brazil, Peru, India, and the northeastern and western mountains of the United States is where granite can be found. Granite is mined from a quarry by using powerful machines to blast out the raw granite. The raw granite will be in a very rough form, therefore it is sent to a workshop that will use a milling machine to cut and polish it. There are many kinds of finishes that can be applied on granite but the most common are polished, honed, or thermal.

Granite is very easy to maintain. If granite is properly sealed, the surface will not harbor any bacteria growth nor will it accumulate dust and dirt easily, making it easy to maintain and does not require any chemicals. To keep granite in good condition all that is needed to be done is to wipe the surface with water and very little soap.
Mining for granite has a big environmental impact because it goes through a process that uses a lot of energy and is water intensive. To kind of minimize the carbon footprint of transporting granite, the best option is to use local materials from within a 500-miles radius. Granite lasts quite a long time but when it does get discarded, especially big granite slab, it should be downcycled into smaller slabs for other applications.
When installing granite in a setting there are no negative effects on indoor air quality.
