GYPSUM BOARD
pa nou chang - ds 224 - fall 2020
Gypsum board is a smooth hard material and is most commonly used for interior walls and ceiling surfaces. An advantage of gypsum board is that it is fire resistant while a disadvantage is that it attracts moisture. The acoustic value of gypsum board is determined, depending on how it is installed. It is wrapped in paper produced from recycled paper with additives to provide strength, moisture resistance, and mold resistance.
After gypsum rock is mined, it is crushed and heated. Next it is mixed with water and additives to form a slurry. The slurry is fed between continuous layers of recycled paper on a long board machine. As the board moves down a conveyer line, the calcium sulfate recrystallizes or rehydrates, reverting to its original rock state. The paper becomes chemically and mechanically bonded to the core. The board is then cut to length and conveyed through dryers to remove any free moisture.

The life span for gypsum is long (expected service of over fifty years) while the cost of installation and construction is low. Gypsum boards can be cleaned with water and cloth to remove dirt marks. If gypsum boards have serious damages such as holes and dents, a professional is needed to repair and patch it up.
Gypsum board has low level of thermal conductivity meaning that it is a natural insulator, it can be recycled and produced from wastes of other industry. After it is installed and undisturbed, there is no problem with indoor air quality. The indoor air quality is only affected during the construction process because sawing and sanding produces dusts. Gypsum dust contains silica, vermiculite, perlite, and lime, which are irritants to the skin, eyes, and lungs.
