ACRYLICPAINT
spencer fitzgerald - ds 224 - fall 2020
Acrylic paint is a popular type of paint used for a variety of interior and exterior applications. The paint is made from pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer solution and acrylic resin. They are chemical-based meaning they become water-resistant when they dry. While the chemicals in acrylic paint allow it to have greater elasticity (less flaking and cracking) and be more durable, they also make acrylic paint harder to clean compared to water-based latex paints. The added chemicals in acrylic paint also make them exude more odors and fumes than latex paints. Acrylic paints are also more resistant to the sun than latex and oil paints, making them a great choice for exterior applications.
Acrylic paint is fairly easy to maintain. Because of its increased elasticity and durability, the material is able to withstand varying temperatures and moisture levels. If scuffed, the paint can be reapplied to the area and blended seamlessly.

When looking at environmental impact, opinions are mixed regarding the sustainability of the material. While the paint is fairly durable and long-lasting, acrylic paint is essentially made from plastics. Because of this, everytime the paint is rinsed down the drain or thrown out, plastic is put into the water supply/ environment. While it's unclear how detrimental this is long-term, many painters are looking at better ways to dispose of the material, such as separating the plastic from the paint.
In terms of applying the paint to an interior/exterior wall, it's important to plan ahead by gathering any materials needed (paint, roller, painter's tape, etc.). It's recommended that before painting, you get samples of multiple colors and swatch them to see the effects of different lighting. Before painting, a primer is usually applied to enhance the application but it's not required. From there, it's important that the paint is mixed and applied evenly using whichever technique desired. For cleanup, soap and water can be used but a paint thinner might be needed depending on the type of acrylic paint used. While painting, it's important to ventilate the space.
