PINE
spencer fitzgerald - ds 224 - fall 2020
Pine is a genus of evergreen conifers containing about 120 different species native primarily to northern temperate regions. It's a softwood, meaning that it grows relatively quickly, making it a popular choice in material. It's known for its light color and abundance of knots. Pine is used for structural elements as well as furniture, walls, ceilings, and decorative items.
Because of its fast growth rate, pine is considered a very sustainable wood. Unlike many hardwoods, pine and other softwoods are able to be replenished quickly, making them a popular choice of material.

An application of pine is in flooring and paneling. The wood is cut into strips, sanded, and installed (usually in a tongue and groove manner). The material is then typically stained (if chosen) and sealed. The material can be cleaned with soap and water, and requires refinishing every decade or so to maintain.
